Get to know the amazing team behind Curtin Volunteers!...

Nafisa Akhter: CV! President

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? I joined CV! in 2014 as a Program Leader for the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program. I joined initially to get more involved whilst studying so that I could have a well-rounded university experience. However, in the years that I have been involved with CV!, I made new friends, I networked with professionals in the same area of interest as myself and I also developed leadership skills that I can take away with me to the workforce upon finishing my course. I consider myself very lucky to be part of the leadership team at CV!, and it is one of the biggest highlights of my university life.
What are you studying? Bachelor of Science (Nutrition).
What is your dream career? I want to host my own Talk Show one day.
What’s a fun fact about you? I have sprained my knee, ankle and wrist in the past but hey, I am still in great working condition.
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Cow brain curry.


Marcella Low: CV! Vice President

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? I have always loved volunteering in a variety of settings, and when I joined Curtin in 2015 and saw the kind of opportunities that CV! provided I knew that I had to get on board! The people here at CV! are pretty amazing too, and I feel my uni experience has been improved so much just in the last year and a half that I've been a part of CV!.
What are you studying? Bachelor of Speech Pathology.
What is your dream career? One part of me would love to start a business selling the crafts that I make, another would love to be a travel blogger, and a third would be happy working with children as a speechie.
What’s a fun fact about you? If it can be DIYed, I'm probably going to try! I could easily spend all day knitting or making cards and decorating stuff.
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Fermented stinky tofu was pretty puke-worthy, but I've also had alligator, frogs, snails, reindeer, kangaroo (hey, it's pretty weird where I'm from), among other things. I think everything should be tried at least once when it comes to food, though I've yet to convince myself to try any insects.


Marc Phillips: CV! Manager

(full-time staff)

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? I joined CV! as a student in 2005 or 2006 because CV! offered me a great opportunity to get more involved at Curtin and in the community. I left in 2008 and returned in 2012 when I was offered the full-time position of Student Development Officer!
What is your dream career? I would have to say soccer player but I would have had to have been skilful for that to have happened!
What’s a fun fact about you? I have a Diploma in Engineering and a Degree in Accounting but have never pursued a career in either.
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Frog legs.


Krishan Shah: Volunteer Officer

(full-time staff)

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? More than anything, I love the people I get to meet and work with in my job!
What is your dream career? Volunteer officer for Curtin Volunteers! of course (I understand that my boss will be reading this).
What’s a fun fact about you? I recently almost got attacked by a grizzly bear in Alaska! Fun in hindsight at least.
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Cow udder, yak tongue, ox-tail, guinea pig, scorpion. I'm sure there are more but that's a few at least!


Nimi Goh: Communications Officer

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? Because I believe in CV!'s cause and what it stands for. It is filled with amazing people and I believe it has helped enhance the lives of many.
What are you studying? Speech Pathology.
What is your dream career? Speech pathologist.
What’s a fun fact about you? I love food!
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? The food I eat may be weird to people but not weird to me so I'm not too sure.


Laura Niebel: Graphic Designer

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? I joined CV! to give back to the community and use my skills to support a worthwhile cause. As CV!'s graphic designer I can work from home, which is great for someone who's busy looking after kids, working and studying!
What are you studying? A Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Digital Design and Web Media.
What is your dream career? I'd love to work as a digital & print designer for a social enterprise or non-profit organization. Alternatively I'd be working as an in-house designer for a company whose products/services I believe in.
What’s a fun fact about you? I came to Australia to travel around the country for 1 year... and after more than 12 years I'm still here!
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Frog legs (on a small Caribbean island).


Adam Luce: Project Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? I was really keen to give back to the community, and thought that CV! was the best way to reach those in need. The opportunity to practise leadership skills and gain experience managing programs and events was also a big incentive. Meeting awesome people was another great bonus!
What are you studying? Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical Engineering), Bachelor of Science (Extractive Metallurgy)
What is your dream career? Travelling the world while running my own business is something I'm definitely excited to achieve!
What’s a fun fact about you? I love dancing and once went so hard that one of my shoes tore in half.
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? A century egg. Would not eat again.


Jason Lai: Project Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? I joined CV! because I want to meet new people to extend my network, I want to learn how to run programs and projects because it will help me to develop communication, time management and problem solving skills. Lastly, I love volunteering that is why I am with CV!!!!
What are you studying? Chemical Engineering and Finance.
What is your dream career? I want to become a chemical process engineer.
What’s a fun fact about you? Never got drunk before :)
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Crocodile meat.


Hein Htet: Project Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? I am very passionate about volunteering. I am happy to volunteer whenever I have free time. I strongly believe that it is very important to support the community and volunteer for events with a good cause. Curtin Volunteers! offers a wide range of opportunities with great different causes.
What are you studying? Bachelor of Engineering (Electronic and Communication Engineering).
What is your dream career? Experienced and established professional at one of the most influential international technology companies. At the same time, I would like to be able to give back to community.
What’s a fun fact about you? I prefer walking rather than taking the bus.
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? I tend not to eat weird food.


Jeanette Wong: Program Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? I joined because I wanted to challenge myself to try new things, to make new friends, to step out of my comfort zone, to learn new things about others and myself, to gain some exposure to things that are related to my field of study and at the end of it all, TO JUST HAVE FUN!
What are you studying? Master of Speech Pathology.
What is your dream career? To be a vegetarian connoisseur. I aspire to travel the world and taste and critque exotic vegetarian delicacies across the seven seas...
What’s a fun fact about you? I love cats, I breathe cats, I would like a hairless cat!
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Homecooked coffee-infused fish...hmmm?


Tiffany Verga: Program Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? I joined CV! because I wanted to get more involved around campus in extracurricular activities whilst studying at Curtin.
What are you studying? Law/Journalism.
What is your dream career? My dream career is to become a lawyer (which was definitely inspired by Suits).
What’s a fun fact about you? I'm double jointed in both my thumbs and can bend them backwards on the opposite side of my hands.
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Probably snails or witchetty grubs.


Amber Camp: Remote and Indigenous Trip Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? I joined CV! to take part in opportunities which I otherwise wouldn't be able to. It is a great way to meet people who study very different things than you but have similar interests other than studies. Now some of my closest friends have been made through volunteering. It allows me to give to others because I feel I have skills and time to assist people, I always like to think that if I were in need even of just a tutor that someone would be kind enough to give up some time to help me out. So while I have time and there are programs that I believe I can help out in I will take part in these :) Volunteering is Life!
What are you studying? Environmental Biology.
What is your dream career? My dream career would have to be a mix of all my favourite things...... So it would involve wildlife conservation and care but also incorporate youth education to help educate our younger generation about animals and the environment and how interesting and special it is but also how we need to care for it.
What’s a fun fact about you? I hate shoes! So yes you may see me around uni bare foot ;)
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Mushrooms, they are disgusting little things with gills and all. Eeeew cringing just thinking about them.


Laura Lee Shee We: Program Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? CV! is a great opportunity to meet and work with new people. I joined CV! because I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and try something different and challenging while enjoying my university life and also helping the community.
What are you studying? Chemical Engineering and Chemistry.
What is your dream career? Nail art professional.
What’s a fun fact about you? I usually say unrelated random things in the middle of a conversation.
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? French fries dipped in ice cream.


Naomy Dang: Project Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? I joined CV! to further develop my leadership skills and to be able to use them to create a better change for this world. I believe that being a project leader at CV! enables us to learn the practical skills of managing a team and organising logistics while managing various stakeholders.
What are you studying? Honours in Economics.
What is your dream career? To work in a job where I am able to help other people and personally develop as well as helping others to grow and become better members of society.
What’s a fun fact about you? I may look small but I have done some training in TDK martial arts when I was younger.
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Blood sausage when I was on exchange in Frankfurt, Germany.


Kameleshwaran Caroopanen: Project Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? When I first started at Curtin, it was quite a culture shock to me. Everything was completely different to what I thought. Soon after, I was tangled between my work life and academic life. I felt that I was hardly doing anything for my personal development and hence set out to do something about it. Thankfully, I fell on CV!. The wide diversity within CV! came as a relief to the culture tussle I was facing. Since then, I have been having enriching encounters, learning about myself and most importantly assisting others in achieving their goals through my projects.
What are you studying? Bachelor in Engineering (Electrical Power).
What is your dream career? Entrepreneur.
What’s a fun fact about you? I spend more time watching cooking shows than working on my lab reports.
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Fried Grasshoppers.


Sarah Hoy: Program Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? I joined CV! because I love helping people and it gives me the opportunity to give back to the community. I love seeing people smiling and happy, which makes it all worthwhile. Through volunteering I can share my passion for people and health, whilst further developing key skills such as communication, leadership and time management.
What are you studying? Occupational Therapy.
What is your dream career? To work 4 and a half days a week as an occupational therapist in a private paediatric practice.
What’s a fun fact about you? I was born in Sydney and have lived in WA for 10 years.
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? I had rabbit at a restaurant once. I had never seen it on a menu before and haven't since.


Kate Rolland: Program Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? I joined CV! because I wanted to get more involved in the Curtin community and because I enjoy helping people. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made; all of the CV! members are amazing, kind, friendly and generous people. The kids and families I am privileged to work with are amazing and inspiring.
What are you studying? Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Public Relations.
What is your dream career? I want to work in PR; one day I would love to own my own PR firm.
What’s a fun fact about you? I'm planning on going on exchange next year to Canada!
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? I'm not that adventurous with my food; probably venison or duck?


Brett Jarvis: Program Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? I joined in order to improve my skills and grow as a person.
What are you studying? History and Chinese.
What is your dream career? Historian.
What’s a fun fact about you? I play bass in a heavy metal band that currently consists only of me, and therefore cannot be considered a band.
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Honey ant (through CV! R&I trips).


Michael Lee Shee We: Program Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? I started volunteering with CV! as I thought it was a good way to clear my head from my studies while also helping others out and meeting new people. After a some time, I decided to join the leadership team and I have been enjoying it. Mixing volunteering with studies is great fun.
What are you studying? Bachelor of Chemical Engineering.
What is your dream career? A career in research and development of new technologies.
What’s a fun fact about you? I am a huge football (soccer) fan.
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? I'm very hesitant when it comes to weird food so I can't think of anything.


Kai Yuin Yeo: Program Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? I joined CV! because I wanted to try something new, something different. I've never volunteered before so CV! is kind of like my volunteering 'debut'. I wanted to experience and learn things and be out of my comfort zone so I thought that CV! could give me that. And it did!
What are you studying? Bachelor of Laws.
What is your dream career? My dream career is to be a lawyer, the type of lawyer that you see on TV, the type of lawyer that saves the day. I guess if I don't become a lawyer, I would like to be a professional public speaker, if there is such a career. Something to do with talking to a lot of people.
What’s a fun fact about you? I love noodles. Like, I really, really love noodles.
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Probably frog legs, if that counts as weird.


Drishti Patel: Program Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? To make the most out of my time at Curtin by getting involved and giving back to the community as well. I also saw it as a great opportunity to meet a lot of new people from different walks of life and a way to develop my leadership abilities.
What are you studying? Human Biology Preclinical (BSc).
What is your dream career? To be a doctor and save lives.
What’s a fun fact about you? I love dancing and fortunately I'm pretty good at it.
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Ketchup in a fruit smoothie was pretty weird!


Carrisa Van Wieringen: Project Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? I joined CV! to meet new people, volunteer in the community and understand how different organisations work while developing new skills.
What are you studying? Masters of International Business
What is your dream career? I would love to organise and coordinate events as a career.
What’s a fun fact about you? I have a collection of costume jewellery and wear a different piece per day!
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Does Maccas fries dipped in soft serve ice-cream count??


Taha Ejaz: Program Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? On my first day at Curtin, I came to know about CV! and thought that it sounded very fascinating. Getting to be a part of this team meant a lot to me as I have been involved with event management for last 7 years. Working for the community and getting to socialise with many different people is a great feeling.
What are you studying? Masters of Chemical Engineering.
What is your dream career? Business Analyst for an Oil and Gas firm.
What’s a fun fact about you? Good at nothing although good at so many things.
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Sushi. A lot of people really like it but when I tasted it....no more comments.


Nicholas Png Jiahui: Project Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? I joined CV! because many of my friends were part of CV! and I heard that CV! was incredibly fun!! Also I wanted to try something new while giving back to the community and I thought CV! was a great place to start.
What are you studying? Bachelor of Science (Nursing).
What is your dream career? To work as a nurse in all the different continents in the world.
What’s a fun fact about you? I love the sea (like literally I could just spend the whole day there).
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Fried scorpions in Beijing.


Nero Levinson: Project Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? I love everything about Curtin Volunteers! from volunteering in the projects to the team of awesome program and project leaders and staff! Therefore it was a very easy decision to continue to be a part of CV!
What are you studying? Bachelor of Engineering (Mechatronics).
What is your dream career? A career in building robots that helps our society.
What’s a fun fact about you? I loved running naked in the rain as a child.
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? I once ate some monkey meat in the wild jungles of Burma that was hunted by villagers when I was very young. They even had meat from other hunted animals like tigers! I used to be able to eat pretty much anything as a young Burmese kid but now I wouldn't even touch half of what I ate as a child!


Danie Ming-Quan Kam: Program Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? I joined CV! chiefly to continue to make a positive difference in the community. Additionally, I was keen to challenge myself beyond my comfort zone and gain valuable leadership experience and skills - such as time management, communication and problem solving - which will benefit me in future professional as well as community experiences.
What are you studying? Law/International Relations.
What is your dream career? Ideally a career that allows me to bless others, impart knowledge and challenge me.
What’s a fun fact about you? I have a YouTube account with 0 videos and 300 subscribers!
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Anything I've made that is edible.


Claudia McKie: Remote and Indigenous Trip Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? I joined CV! because I was interested in experiencing life in a rural community and engaging with the youth there.
What are you studying? Occupational Therapy.
What is your dream career? Working as an occupational therapist in a rural or regional setting.
What’s a fun fact about you? I am a mutation.
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Nutella and tomato sauce sandwich.


Dana Morgan: Program Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? To meet new people and to make the most of my experience at Curtin.
What are you studying? Speech Pathology.
What is your dream career? Travel photographer / blogger.
What’s a fun fact about you? I survived CV! training with 2.5 hours of sleep!
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Mac and cheese with apple sauce.


Marko Zegarac: Program Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? Originally, I joined CV! as I was required to do volunteering as part of the Curtin Leaders Program. Although new to me, I enjoyed my time as a volunteer and ended up continuing my role to this day.
What are you studying? Bachelor of Science (Geophysics), Bachelor of Science (Applied Geology).
What is your dream career? Exploration geoscientist.
What’s a fun fact about you? Love to read philosophy (Rene Decartes, Marcus Aurelius, Argumentation theory, logical fallacies etc.).
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Snails, frog thighs.


Rizal Samad: Program Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? I joined CV! because I found it a good opportunity for me to improve in areas that I'm not quite strong at, have fun, meet new people and last but not least, do something that I'm passionate about.
What are you studying? Laboratory Medicine.
What is your dream career? Working as a medical scientist in pathology.
What’s a fun fact about you? I enjoy cooking.
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Rabbit burger.


Umar Khan: Program Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!?  Mentoring at AIME made me realise things I have been missing out at university and then I came across CV! which I believe has it all in one package. It will enhance number of my skills, give me a chance to step out of my comfort zone, help me in developing my confidence and most importantly, I will be able to make the most out of my uni experience.
What are you studying? Chemical Engineering.
What is your dream career? To be a successful chemical engineer at a well-known company, leading a team and be at a position where everyone can look up to me for help.
What’s a fun fact about you? Once I get comfortable in an environment, I talk a lot.
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Crab.


Xavier Hazard: Program Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? I love people and volunteering is a fantastic way to meet, work with and learn from people from all walks of life.
What are you studying? Law and Journalism.
What is your dream career? Anything that makes me happy is my dream job.
What’s a fun fact about you? I know all the Harry Potter films off by heart.
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Crocodile, it tastes like chicken.


Nadine Elmowafy: Program Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? I joined CV!  because I enjoy helping out in the community and meeting new people and this is a great way to do both!
What are you studying? Bachelor of Laws & Bachelor of Commerce
What is your dream career? I haven't quite decided yet but I think a successful lawyer would be a great start!
What’s a fun fact about you? I am obsessed with cats and sugar! I'll definitely be a cat lady!
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? Cat fur! My cat sheds alot of fur!


Louis Clarke: Program Leader

Why did you join Curtin Volunteers!? I firmly believe that if everyone on Earth gave just a part of their time to helping others, the vast majority of the problems in the world would evaporate. For me, my involvement in CV! is a way to improve my part of the world, and to be part of the solution.
What are you studying? Bachelor of Civil & Construction Engineering.
What is your dream career? My dream is to develop a humanitarian engineering organisation that does projects around the world.
What’s a fun fact about you? I have travelled to every continent (except Antarctica).
What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten? I've drunk cocoa tea in Bolivia - it is highly illegal in most of the world because it is used to derive cocaine.
