Attacks in Paris

[Posted: 16 Nov 2015]

On behalf of the Curtin community I offer our deepest sympathies to those affected by the terrible attacks in Paris. Our hearts and thoughts go out to victims and their loved ones.

I am mindful that the Paris attacks come only days after a Russian passenger flight was bombed and suicide bombings in Beirut. Any member of the Curtin community who has been affected by terrorism, or who needs support of any kind, is encouraged to contact the Student Wellbeing Hotline on 1800 244 043 FREE or the Curtin Counselling Service on +61 8 9266 7850. The University will provide any assistance possible to help those affected.

As a sign of support we will light Curtin Stadium with the colours of the French flag, and a multi-faith memorial service will be held on the Bentley Campus for all who wish to attend. Details of the service will be provided as soon as they are finalised.

We had begun to hear reports of these events on Saturday morning as senior staff joined members of Council for a Council workshop. In opening the workshop, the Chancellor reflected on the fact that such events reinforce the value of universities, because we create knowledge, understanding and enlightenment, all of which contribute to a strong civil society.

In the wake of these terrible events, I know we will all continue to support all our friends and colleagues within our own wonderful and much-valued multicultural community.
