A special friendship formed through fitness

[Posted: 12 May 2017]

It's amazing the people you meet when you're working out.

A special friendship has formed between two Curtin Stadium fitness members - Corey and Nick.

Nick has been training at Curtin Stadium since the 1990's when the original Fitness Centre was in the Dome.

Nick has limited movement capability in his lower body and conducts most fitness exercises from his wheelchair.

The past two months, Corey has been working out with Nick every Friday to complete their weights and cardio routine.

Corey helps Nick by motivating him, setting up equipment, providing technique assistance and making sure he is safe to complete the exercises.

Corey is currently studying a bachelor of Primary Education at Curtin University after his previous work as a bricklayer for 15 years prior.

He has a passion for learning new things, exploring other cultures, and traveling the world and is currently learning Cantonese.

He started volunteering at a little school in Nusa Dua in Bali in 2010 at a not-for-profit local charity, teaching poor and disadvantaged young girls how to speak English, hospitality skills and physical education. He flies over  6 weeks a year to teach and help where he can.

Corey loves training and helping others and when he saw Nick training with a volunteer a few months ago, he introduced himself and they hit it off from the start.

It's rewarding to see members like this working together to achieve their fitness goals!
