Triplets play Netball!

University Games is the sports competition of the year for university students to get involved in around Australia. In addition to the annual Australian University Games, each year there is a Western University Games (WUG) held in Western Australia for five rival university students to compete against each other.

This year’s WUG was held in Bunbury from 2 July to 5 July with Curtin University’s students competing in a multi-sport event like no other.

One of the highlights at this year’s WUG was the Ramirez-Smith triplet sisters playing on Curtin University’s Women’s Netball team. Roberta, Lauren and Jacinta are in their first year of university, with all three of them undergoing a Bachelor in Health Science with the aspiration of becoming Physiotherapists.

The sisters recently moved from the country and the WUG was a great opportunity and the ideal environment for them to meet other students, share their passion in netball with fellow team members, and create lasting memories.

Growing up, the Ramirez-Smith triplets played basketball, netball and tennis – netball from the age of five. The sisters reached an age when they had to decide which sport they wanted to continue playing and it was an obvious choice to continue playing netball.

To the girls, netball is a sport that provides them with something to improve in every day and it allows them to set goals for the future and work towards achieving them. They enjoy playing with each other because they understand how they other plays on the court and they also like the idea of "confusing other teams" being identical triplets.

Roberta, Lauren and Jacinta brought home the silver medal for Curtin University, coming second place in Women's Netball. The girls are very much looking forward to participating and representing Curtin University at the 2017 Australian University Games to be held in the Gold Coast in September.
