Bird Claims Seventh National Title

[Posted: 19 Mar 2015]

Curtin student and member of the Elite Athlete Program, Steve Bird, claimed a seventh career national title and his second title in the men’s kayaking 200 metre, after he took the honours over training partner Brodie Holmes. Winning by just 0.1 seconds in what was a close race, Bird set a new personal best, indicative both of his form and how hard he was pushed by Holmes.

Racing from lane five, Bird was touted as the man to beat. He carried his successful Grand Prix form into the finals, clocking 34.91 to marginally defeat Holmes who came in at 35.01, South Australian Callum Dunn at 35.06. Fellow Western Australia Institute of Sport (WAIS) athlete Jesse Phillips came in fifth in a time of 35.57.

Bird and Phillips also combined in the men’s kayaking doubles 200 metre, where they finished second to Kenny Wallace and Lachlan Tame by a mere 0.07 seconds.
