Day One of Uni Games Sydney

[Posted: 30 Sep 2014]

Sydney is heating up this week, on and off the playing field with Curtin's performance as Day one of Uni Games comes to an end.

Men’s badminton had the upper hand against La Trobe, smashing the Victorians 210-87. It was mixed results for the Women’s Badminton team, defeating RMIT 208-195 in their first game and 142-218 against The University of Sydney.

Over in Ultimate, Curtin was off to a flying start with a 13-1 victory against Griffith University and thrashing Notre Dame 15-0. It's all looking good for the Ultimate team as they assured us their best is yet to come!

Meanwhile down on Maroubra Beach in the Sydney sunshine, beach volleyball seemed to be a popular choice for spectators. The Curtin Captain, Laura Dunnett and the beach volleyball team made an impact winning straight sets against Adelaide University and Swinburne. Things are set to heat up on Day two, with the team taking on local rivals Murdoch and the mercury set to hit 33 degrees!

Men’s hockey had a thrilling day, opening the games with a goal in the first minute against Swinburne University. Curtin lead the way taking them out with 7-2 and The University of Western Sydney 5-0.

Men’s Basketball played two very close games against the University of Newcastle with a 45-55 and an on-the-buzzer-shot against Adelaide University with a 44-43.

The Curtin Cricket team were up against one of the home teams and long standing champions, the University of New South Wales (UNSW) first game in. Curtin gave them a good run for their money with the opening batsman going 0/95, however UNSW remained undefeatable winning their 16th match in a row and taking out Curtin by 13 runs. Another notch in the belt for the NWS boys.

If victory was measured by determination, Curtin's netball and volleyball team would be bringing it home to Perth this week after two losses against strong opposition on day one. Despite all losses, spirits remained high as they prepared for the next four days.
