Curtin's collaboration with the Fremantle Women's Dockers Team brings new learning opportunites for students
[Posted: 6 Mar 2017]
The Fremantle Dockers first ever women's team played the Adelaide Crows on Sunday 26 February at Fremantle Oval.
This moment is hopefully the first of many defining moments for women in professional and elite sport in Australia, and Curtin University is fortunate enough to be part of this exciting collaboration.
Australian Football is a very male dominated industry and the development of the women's league sends a powerful statement that gender restrictions should not be placed on a person's ability in education, the workplace or the sporting industry.
Curtin Uni has four students representing the Fremantle Dockers AFLW team - Hayley Miller, Belinda Smith, Brianna Green, Stephanie Cain, along with alumni Dana Hooker. Curtin Stadium's very own Elite Athlete Co-ordinator, Tarryn Dickerson has been chosen to be the Team's Welfare Officer.
“It is an exciting opportunity to be involved in this inaugural squad and my role as a Welfare Officer allows me to help the players manage their busy schedules and ensure they are performing at their best on and off the field,” Ms Dickerson said.
Curtin students will also be provided with work placement opportunities throughout the AFLW season, in fields including social media, public relations, physiotherapy, dietetics, exercise science and occupational therapy.
Leading up to the first game of the season, a few select Curtin students were fortunate enough to spend their summer working with the Fremantle Dockers on the content marketing strategies for the 2017 AFL year, marking what will be the first of many exciting opportunities for Curtin students.
