Elite Athlete Kathryn Slattery too strong for New Zealand defenders

[Posted: 7 Dec 2016]

The first women’s hockey international has taken place in Auckland where Australia have avenged their Rio Olympics quarter-final loss to New Zealand, with a massive 6-0 win.

The star of the game was our Curtin Elite Athlete, Kathryn Slattery, as she led the way with a double and then set up a third.

Both teams carrying new players after the Rio Olympics worked hard to bed new combinations and headed into halftime only 1-0 to the Hockeyroos.

Throughout the second half the Australian team found gaps in New Zealand’s defence allowing them to run riot through the middle, despite the four newcomers on their side.

Ashlea Fey made it five early in the final period from a penalty corner, then Slattery rounded off a superb performance with a strong run along the baseline before successfully scoring from a narrow angle.

The Hockeyroos will play a three-match series against New Zealand with the first test in their favour.
